Buyhavanese certainly supports the notion of puppy buyers educating themselves before they purchase that special dog. However, when things go wrong, there are many places in the world that demand that Breeders stand behind their puppies.
For example, the AVMA Puppy Lemon Law site outlines the recourse puppy buyers have in 21 States in the US if their pup/dog is found to have a genetic or other disease that impacts quality of life, requires intrusive surgery or causes pain or death in the animal.
In Holland, the Breeder is required to refund up to the cost of the animal to support medical assistance in genetic and other diseases where the quality of life of the animal is impacted.
And when dealing with a registered Breeder of the KC, there is a list of things you can do and an individual you can contact to help you when things go wrong posted on this website:
In all of the Buyhavanese stories of Havanese who have been diagnosed with a genetic/other disease, the owners who have participated in sharing their experiences are explicitly or implicitly warning puppy buyers about buying from the kennel where they purchased their puppy because the Breeder acted in a non-supportive manner. They are warning you that there are breeders out there who are kennel-blind and who do not accept any responsibility when things go wrong, nor do they plan to do things differently in order to avoid the situation in the future.
The screen shot shown below, from the website noted, suggests that the fault in ending up with a puppy with Legge Cathe Perthes or Autoimmune Thyroid Disease or Sebaceous Adenites or Autoimmune Allergis lies with the Owner, not the Breeder.
This is a website for Breeders of Havanese by a Breeder of Havanese. Look careful at the screen shot below to see what the FB page is called because I will not support the site by reposting the name here. While there is a load of information that I do support, the first posts on this site denigrate Puppy Buyers who end up with a dog with a genetic disease and that is simply wrong.
My strong suggestion to Puppy Buyers is that you now have another red flag to observe when you go searching for your forever puppy. Ask yourself these questions:
1. Does the Breeder you are interviewing support this website on their Facebook page?
2. Is the Breeder you are looking at a supportive part of this Breeder Information Community?
If he or she is, then I suggest to you that the Breeder you are considering is NOT the right breeder for you because the Breeder running this website for Breeders shows a strong arrogance towards Puppy Buyers.
Not only that, if you read what this Breeder has published on this website, particularly early on, you will see that this Breeder does NOT support the Owners of puppies/dogs with a genetic disease speaking out and sharing their stories so that other potential puppy buyers can learn from their mistakes. This Breeder, and the manager of this site, is also saying that Puppy Buyers who end up with a dog or dogs with a genetic or other disease deserve what they get...They are fools to be sucked into buying a pup with a genetic disease and even more foolish if they bought more than one puppy from the same kennel.
Now folks, that makes me very angry indeed. Puppy buyers are often sold a sack of goods by a fast talking breeder with a fancy website and a bag full of ribbons. What puppy buyer understands how COI or number of litters in a year or inbreeding or popular sires or an imbalance of dams and studs in a kennel or the inability of a breeder to breed outside of his/her breeding family because other breeders will not breed to his or her dogs has the potential to affect the quality of the puppy he or she is looking at buying? These Breeders do not talk to puppy buyers about these issues. They do not share that they have had multiple problems within their lines of expressed diseases like LCP or SA. These Breeders insist that they have 'perfect lines with no problems!'
This website goes on to say the following to those of you who have purchased a puppy or dog who was not supported by the breeder:
IF YOU AS A BUYER DO NOT RESEARCH BEFORE BUYING THEN YOU SUPPORT POOR ANIMAL HUSBANDRY. IT IS TOO LATE ONCE YOU HAVE PURCHASED FIDO OR FELIX AND FOUND HIM TO BE IN THE LEAST A BIT OF A SORRY EXAMPLE OF ITS BREED. TO THEN PURCHASE ANOTHER OR EVEN MORE , TELLS US MORE ABOUT YOU THAN IT DOES POOR BREEDERS.
YOU ACT IMPULSIVELY
YOU ARE IMPATIENT
YOU WANT IMMEDIATELY FOR OTHERS TO SUCCUMB TO YOU
YOU ARE A CONTROLLING PERSONA
YOU WERE PROBABLY A VERY SPOILED CHILD
YOU ARE IGNORANT
Welcome to the world of an Arrogant Breeder who sees Puppy Buyers as 'marks' and who, by posting the above, supports breeders who do not stand behind their puppies because the Puppy Buyer was a fool to buy from that kennel to begin with!
Traditionally Owners of pups/dogs with a disease just 'suck it up' when their pet is diagnosed. The owner of the FB page above obviously prefers that this is how things should continue to be in the future. Bullet to FB page owner: THAT IS NO LONGER GOING TO HAPPEN! Buyhavanese will ensure that Owners of pups with a genetic or other quality of life disease now have a voice in the Breeding conversation. We are activity searching for stories to share on this website so please contact us!
