We received a letter in the mail today from OFA (Orthopaedic Foundation for Animals) indicating that our dog, MistyTraila Bella Gemma, had been selected to participate in a study of AIT at the Diagnostic Cente for Population and Animal Health (DCPAH) at Michigan State University.
As Bella was due to have a blood panel in the next short while anyways, we, her Daddy and I, asked her, and she barked "YES" that she is pleased to participate in the study for two reasons: 1.) it will not mean any extra blood being drawn, and 2.) the study may help other dogs with AIT because the aim of the study is to investigate the progression of canine autoimmune thyroiditis (AIT).
Bella will see her Vet next week for her blood panel. A sample of her blood will be sent to OFA to be passed on to Michigan State. Her Daddy and I will sign the form for her results from this study to be placed in the OPEN OFA DATABANK for AIT.
Bella encourages other Havanese with AIT to bark "YES" to participation, and her Daddy and I encourage other owners of dogs with AIT that are registered with OFA who are following this site, to participate in this study as well if you are contacted.
This is how we move forward to protect future generations of Havanese.
