Tragedy Strikes Croatia: Havanese Therapy Dogs offer Emotional Assistance
Prof Renata Fridrih wrote to update Buyhavanese about the new role that the Havanese Therapy dogs in Croatia played during the recent flood in Kostajnic, Croatia:
Excuse me for being late reporting but there have been many events that have occurred here that have required my attention:
Kostajnica, Croatia, the town where Lidija Prpić lives, had a natural disaster - the flooding of the Una River. (As you recall, Lidija was one of the first Croatian School Teachers to open her classroom to the Croatian Havanese Therapy dogs two years ago.)
We have collected humanitarian aid and taken it to a crisis intervention center in Kostajnic, Croatia.
We also visited the fire department in Kostajnica, Croatia and talked with firefighters. The president of the voluntary fire brigade, Tomislav Žlićarić, the firefighters, the Dog Guide in Training for our project, Vladimir Šubarić, as well as the Havanese puppy, Kinga who was dedicated to the Firefighters' Havanese Therapy Dog Program, all became involved in emotional therapy work with the flood survivors.
One of our first Havanese Therapy Dogs, Evie, also participated in the therapy work. Her behaviours indicated high levels of stress in all those affected by this catastrophe. There are wonderful people in this small town. Fortunately they have a mayor with a huge heart, Dalibor Bišćan. I hope this community has a better future.
I'm glad that we have a dog project that has been able to assist them in the right way. We have also learned new strategies to use from this disaster that we will follow in the future.
