A Breeder's Rant: What do you think?

April 9, 2018

This CKC Havanese Breeder's rant was posted on Facebook on April 8 in the am. A link to the post was sent to Buyhavanese by a trusted Havanese Breeder.

At first I thought the post was a late April Fools post. As I read through the self-proclaimed rant, line by line, however, I became more and more concerned. What do you think?

HELLO, (long rant this am)

Triggered by seeing newbie owners, Growingly Complaining about poor temperaments, hard to house train, health issues, and sad to see NEW owners with 8+ week pups, putting Pee pads, INSIDE THEIR HOME< Ahhhhhhhhhhhh !!!

Where are the breeders, Where is the AFTER Care for and of puppy owners. Many simple questions that should be answered by an experienced breeder are not being answered. New owners are struggling with the health and temperaments of their new pup.

Havanese are again in the Top 5-10 most popular dogs, this is Amazing and Rewarding. (but also a worry)It makes me very Sad and concerned. These Precious little Doggies have Well Earned this. (but... we never like the butt's...) I am disturbed on the havanese forum sites, how many people are starting to have problems with them, with Bad temperaments, bad health, Badly bred, poorly raised. Stemmed from poorly bred, and poorly raised. From what is being described as javanese Characteristics ie: Growling at Children, anxiety, cannot house-train.

As ...Breeders, we are Very careful on the health AND the temperaments we breed, how we Raise, AND how we place puppies according to the new owners AND the pups personality. A great breeding program is Very Very intensive and detailed. WE do not just put 2 dogs together, we do not just let the pups raise themselves. We start by bringing in NEW top world Bloodlines, so we are not inbreeding, and YUP, not all work out, at $10,000 per import, only some work out to continue.

We Pay and travel $4000 ish to breed with Top Healthy proven Bloodlines. (The overhead is so high, working in a group is the only way we have made this work... TEAM Work makes Dreams work...)

As a breeder one MUST be prepared to have health issues, IT HAPPENS !! such is life and when breeding living beings...  A breeder MUST be prepared to remove a line from her breeding program, No matter WHAT the cost, if the new bloodline shows serious life altering issues. (Been there, had to do it more than once - one import brought in Thyroid, one brought in SA and Cardiac issues, one line had nasty temperaments).
According to the Vets, and one reason they do not have respect for many breeders, is that many breeders fail testing, and Breed anyways, to try to recoup their losses. This is So Wrong, but nothing to stop people from inbreeding, and breeding in health issues... SADLY dog breeding is not governed in North America and many places around the world.

So if you WANT to try your shoes, and breed a litter of pups, maybe you want pups for your Grandkids, or maybe you want to experience having pups, or having your kids experience having pups, We will HOLD your hand through it. WE will guide you. CKC dog shows are Very fun, and even more fun if someone is there to guide you. Having a litter of pups is not for everyone, so if you get into something, over your head, we have other members to take over. (WE will help with the paperwork and guide you or even do it for you... but Every puppy must be registered on a correct CKC NB contract.  POINT is, we will guide you and hold your hand through it all, and at your choice we will watch overhead, or we can micromanage.

Do not worry about homes for your new pups as we usually always have 20+ approved people waiting for a Well bred, Well Raised pet puppy. Finding homes is Not a problem, WELL bred, well raised pups sell themselves. Vets All over are giving out our name after seeing how fantastic our pups are, Our biggest clientele is actually a lot of Vets and Vet Techs.

Raising pups PROPERLY, and actually Raising them, not expecting them to raise themselves is mandatory. (you see the same with our Children that are not being raised, but left to raise themselves.... They do not always turn out as Functional citizens). Following the set guidelines is also mandatory. Doing your own thing is allowed if it works better for you, and the pups is excellent. As long as at 9 weeks, you have a pup that knows you do not just potty on the floor anywhere, and as long as the pup is confident, and comfy to sleep all night in his crate, and is well socialized and has early social stimulation.

The pups will lie happily to be groomed and have nails trimmed, teeth brushed, etc.

Anyway, (my rant for the day), Proud that our breed is up in the most popular dogs, but Sad, that breeding is not governed. IT is up to us, to Educate the public, on HOW to research a puppy and a breeder. and TEACH the public on what to ask and what to look for.

We are always looking for members to work with our team, and Raise healthy puppies. There are strict rules though, that MUST be followed. You do not have to research pedigrees, We do that for you, to make sure the COI is acceptable, and a proper match.
WE know what pedigrees to stay away from with 21 years of experience combined with many of the Top world breeders knowledge of pedigrees.
Our experience will pave the way for you. WE can do all the showing for you, or maybe you would like to do it, We can do it, or you can do it, (we will TEACH you and hold your hand), We will MicroManage you if you Like, but we LOVE it when you grow your own set of wings, and do your own thing...

ALL breeding dogs, must conform to the CKC standard, there is No breeding a pet line, and dogs with unacceptable faults or failed health testing. There is Zero tolerance in breeding a dog with Failed testing or bad temperaments, or faulty structure.
To Work with our Team, and raise a litter of puppies a year, or two, Rules need to be followed, but we set you up for Success. How much you do, and how much you want us to do is up to you, but...

You MUST do the health screening, but we hold your hand and show you how we do things. To work with us, MOST things have to be done our way. Vet files, and your home must also be open to visit.

Pups MUST MUST be raised in the living area of the home, not in a barn, or basement or garage, and MUST be potty trained starting at 3weeks, and 100% going to potty station by 7 weeks, and then outside. (Poor potty is the #1 reason for people to give up their dogs and many times, it is the fault of the breeder, that raised the pups for 7-9 weeks, on a rack, or a paper lined pen, forcing them to Eat, sleep, play live in the Same area). pups are Ready at 3 weeks, to leave the whelp box, (DEN) and come out to potty. Given the chance and the right set up, they train themselves between 3-4 weeks. This gives the New owner a Great headstart on house training, and many say, the pup just carried on, and was totally trained in a month. Pups MUST be crate trained, prior to going to new homes, this helps the new owner with no separation anxiety. (this is becoming a problem in the breed as well).

NO NO NO potty paper in the house after 8 weeks of age, Why are people Teaching and encouraging pups to potty in the house, ? after 8 weeks old, it is OUTSIDE only, Potty pads, used incorrectly are one of the leading causes to poor potty manners. Even an elderly or disabled person, should have a potty station outside on the deck or patio, Not a pee pad in every room. NEVER treat your pup for peeing outside, or they focus on the treat, and do not empty bladder and come back in the house to pee.

As experienced Breeders, The AFTER help we give you is Extensive, What we have learned we pass on.

Some people, want to take off 2 weeks of work and try it, and have us do the rest.
POINT is, we will guide you and hold your hand through it all, and at your choice - we will watch overhead, or we can micromanage.

Do not worry about homes for your new pups as we usually always have 20+ approved people waiting for a Well bred, Well Raised puppy. Finding homes is Not your problem, WELL bred, well raised pups sell themselves.
Raising them PROPERLY, and actually Raising them, not expecting them to raise themselves is mandatory. Following many of the set guidelines is also mandatory. Doing your own thing is allowed if it works better for you, excellent. (we are always learning) As long as at 9 weeks, you have a pup that knows you do not just potty on the floor anywhere, and as long as the pup is confident, and comfy to sleep all night in his crate, and is well socialized and has early social stimulation. WE teach you what socializing and what stimulation is needed at which ages.

BREEDING and Raising pups needs Improving. WE are Ever learning, Ever trying to breed better, Ever trying to make sure the next generation is better than the last. , Puppy Mills are being shut down, but too many newbie breeders are being borne, and they do not seem to carry forward with them, the Experience and knowledge of Us that have been there, and done this for 20+ years. Breeding, Showing, is a passion, not a money making job.

Breeding is NOT always Fun, WE can have a health issue, and remove that line from our breeding program, and do the right thing, and Others, Take this information and Try to Use against you, and Slander you.. (WE see this happening and sites of lies-public media slander is bad in our era), but it has made us stronger, as we can PROVE they are lies, we have proven to rise above the bull-crap).

They say you have to have thick skin to breed and to show, YOU DO.... and if you do not, we do not mind if you want to hide under our skirt tails. WE have many doing this now, as there is so much Aweful stuff out there).  We have members that want their personal information Absolutely NOT out there, and we make it work for them, so they can enjoy what they love, without the Attacking from the Nasty ones. Sadly, the # of members that want to stay off the Radar is rising, and all because of False Public media Slander.

What this means, is only I have to have the tough skin:-(

There will be haters that think NO dog should be bred and ONLY buy rescue, but that is a whole other story, and Supports Rescue, Breeding Well adjusted dogs is what people deserve and what the dog itself deserves.

So, in Conclusion (There will never be a way to make everyone happy).

WE (Our Group) ALL Sleep at night.

WE KNOW what we are doing is 'Giving the pups our all'

Doing our absolute best, not cutting any corners.

As a Group, we are all accountable to each other.
Vet files are open to public
HOUSE doors are open to visitors at Any time.
Everything we do is available for anyone to see.

Life is too short for DRAMA, WE have a Drama free rule.

RISE above the Haters, Rise above the Negativity.

ENJOY life to its fullest, and if WE want this, to have a stress free , healthy life, The puppies we produce, DESERVE the same.

Well...what do you think? Any thoughts about this 'breeder's' rant? Any issues you agree with... or do any of the points get your 'spider senses' tingling?   Tell us what you think....
